Kickstart your morning with this comforting and nourishing barley and date porridge. Packed with fiber, essential nutrients, and natural sweetness, this creamy bowl is more than just delicious – it’s a powerhouse of health benefits. Barley is known for its high soluble fiber content, which supports digestion, promotes heart health, and helps maintain steady energy levels. Combined with the natural sweetness of dates, which are rich in antioxidants and essential minerals like potassium and magnesium, this recipe offers a balanced and guilt-free way to fuel your day.
Barley: High in beta-glucan fiber, which supports gut health, reduces cholesterol levels, and sustains energy throughout the day.
Dates: Naturally sweet and loaded with antioxidants, they provide an excellent source of potassium and magnesium to aid muscle function and overall vitality.
Ghee: A source of healthy fats that enhance digestion and add a luxurious richness to the dish.
Ingredients
Directions
Heat the ghee in a medium saucepan over low to medium heat. Add the barley powder and stir continuously for 1–2 minutes until it turns lightly golden and releases a nutty fragrance. Toasting the barley enhances its flavour, making the porridge rich and aromatic.
Stir in the chopped dried dates, letting them soften slightly in the warm ghee for 2 minutes.
Pour in the water and mix well to create a smooth consistency. Simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the dates to blend into the mixture.
Gradually pour in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat and cook for 5–7 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure the porridge thickens evenly.
Remove the pan from the heat and let the porridge cool slightly before stirring in honey. Adjust the sweetness to your liking – a drizzle is all you need thanks to the natural sugars in the dates.
