Chana Chatpati – also known as chana batata – is a chickpea and potato curry. This is one of our quickest recipes. Usually you would soak the chickpeas for a day and boil them before using them. In our recipe we use tinned chickpeas, which makes this recipe easy to make and is ready to eat under half an hour!

If you have a little extra time, cut some onions, sprinkle some sev and coriander to make it taste even better.
This recipe has a sweet and tangy flavour, perfect for a light lunch. It pleases the adults and young ones.

Here's the step by step recipe for chana chatpati

Step 1

In a medium-large pot, add in the oil and mustard seeds. Then place the lid on and let the seeds crackle.

Ruky Tips
We like using large pots because it makes incorporating all the ingredients together much more easier!

Step 2

Then add the chopped green chillies, curry leaves and sesame seeds. Let the seeds fry for 1 minute and then add the ginger garlic paste and a splash of water

Ruky Tips
We always freshly blend up a batch of ginger garlic paste and keep it in the fridge. Fresh ginger garlic pastes elevates the dish and makes it taste so much better!

Step 3

Add in the chilli powder and salt and then stir well.

Step 4

After 2 minutes add it the sweetcorn and tomato. Stir well. Cover with the lid and let the tomato cook for approximately 5 minutes.

Step 5

Then add the chickpea tin. Strain the water of two of the tins and keep the water of 2 tins. Add the boiled chopped potato chunks and stir well. Add in the tomato ketchup, citric acid and sugar. The sugar balances out the flavours

Step 6

Give it all a good mix, cover and cook for a few minutes

Step 7

Serve the chatpati and garnish with chopped onion, sev and dhana
